Summary
"The first time Gaelin looked into the eye of a sperm whale, she was a toddler, not even two years old. The whale, nicknamed Physty, had fallen ill and was stranded on a nearby beach on Long Island. Gaelin would never forget the first time she looked into Physty's enormous eye and he looked back at her. It is one of her first memories and inspired her constant curiosity for the underwater world. Fast-forward roughly four decades. Gaelin, after working on ocean projects around the world, began to wonder where Physty would be today and decided it was time to learn more about the whales that captured her heart as a toddler and reconnect with these incredible animals. Gaelin set off on a journey to tell the story of sperm whale families, getting in the water to photograph and film them, and observing the close bond between mothers and babies. What Gaelin found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations, and, like humans, take care of one another. Only her years as a marine biologist, diver, and underwater filmmaker and photographer could have prepared the author to create this beautifully stirring story and never-before-seen photography of the world's most marveled ocean species"--, Provided by publisher
