Summary
The cynical, financial crime novel follows young Canadian developer Ron Leyland's romantic encounter with the alluring Mai Xi in Hong Kong, which entices him into dubious big money from Macau and China. Renminbi, the Peoples' Currency, slowly weaves its insidious way into control of the Western World. Illegal capital movement, and unchecked money laundering become commonplace in Canada. Mai Xi emigrates to Canada, becoming Maisie Leyland, a prominent socialite and human rights activist. But they soon find themselves implicated in her brother's raunchy Vancouver nightclubs, prostitution, drug dealing, gambling and laundered cash. Wealth prevails and they are swept away into large-scale property development, financed by the unquestioned foreign capital, uneasy but unchallenged. Becoming ostentatiously rich, they naturally earn political support and the conniving protection of senior Toronto bankers and prominent lawyer friends. But finally, the slow-starting Mounties are hot on their trail. A major investor from Communist China brings billions to invest in Canada but also a persuasive obsession to seduce Maisie. His highly Party-connected wife, becomes her close friend, enormously complicating the situation. Communist China's aggression, appalling human rights behaviour, the Wuhan virus and the kidnapping of the Two Michaels, destroy vital relationships, just as mutual trust becomes critical. Will Ron (Canada) learn to protect himself in a corrupt, manipulative world and struggle out of his naivety in time? Or will he become addicted to the alluring Renminbi?
