Summary
In the spring of 1858, the governor of the British colony of Vancouver Island needed protection and the black community of San Francisco wanted freedom from racial political persecution. They came in search of a dream, a dream that worked for some and not for others. This is a story about three people, Governor Douglas, Silvia Stark and Mifflin Gibbs, that tell the story of an exodus of African Americans from San Francisco. They were trailblazers during the gold rush era.
