The collapse of one of the stone walls of Surprise Valley where the gunman, Lassiter, Jane Withersteen and young Fay Larkin have been imprisoned for the last ten years, results in their capture by a hooded Mormon. The price extracted for Lassiter's and Jane's life is the immediate marriage of 15-year-old Fay Larkin to the mysterious, cruel, hooded Mormon leader. John Shefford, a defrocked minister from Illinois, embarks on a quixotic quest to find Surprise Valley and rescue the prisoners, unaware of the developments that have occurred there
