Summary
Stuart Anderson is a landscape artist who quickly tires of the scenery. Consequently, every year he selfishly seeks out new locations for his inspiration, constantly uprooting his family. When the andersons move to a farmhouse in the spring of 1954, fifteen-year-old Tamara and her mother Liz want to settle down and make it a home. While Tamara experiences her first year of happiness, her mother is diagnosed with tuberculosis and forced into a sanatorium. The anderson family is weighed with fear, sadness and uncertainty. Tamara struggles with her desire to stay in their new home, her fear of losing her mother and her anger at being left in charge of two younger siblings while her father escapes to New York in pursuit of his career. Inh her parents' absence, she sets out on the road to adulthood where she explores such issues as life, death, religion and her own sexuality
